Boric acid, also called boracic acid or orthoboric acid or Acidum Boricum, is a mild acid often used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, in nuclear power plants to control the fission rate of uranium, and as a precursor of other chemical compounds. Boric acid flakes exist in the form of colorless crystals and dissolve in water.
Boric Acid has the chemical formula H3BO3, sometimes written B(OH)3. When occurring as a mineral, it is called sassolite.
Boron-based products are used in hundreds of applications and productive processes. In ancient times used principally as a soldering agent, today such products have a fundamental role everywhere, thanks to the variegated properties of Boron. These extend from catalysts in chemical reactions through to micro-nutrients in the life-cycle of plants, from combustion inhibitors to moderators in nuclear reaction.
Boric acid (100%) powder is odorless, nonstaining and otften used for indoor insect control. This product can be used to kill roaches, water bugs, ants, fleas and silverfish. Insects walk through the dust, ingest it, and die within hours.
Boric acid can be used as an antiseptic for minor burns or cuts and is sometimes used in dressing or salves or is applied in a very dilute eyewash in a 1.5% solution. It is also used as prevention of athlete s foot, by inserting powder in the socks or stocking, and in solution can be used to treat some kinds of ear infections in both humans and animals.
Boric acid has been registered as an insecticide since 1948 for control of cockroaches, termites, fire ants, fleas, silverfish and many other insects. It acts as a stomach poison affecting the insects metabolism. The dry powder is abrasive to the insects exoskeleton.
In combination with its use as an insecticide, boric acid also prevents and destroys existing wet and dry rot in timbers. In combination with an ethylene glycol carrier boric acid can be used to treat external wood against fungal insect attacks.
