Technology marches forward with the AR8200 SERIES-2 (Mark 2, mk II, mk2) keeping the innovative concept and forward thinking alive and bright. It has not been easy improving on what many thought to be the ultimate, however the AR8200 SERIES-2 does provide even more with nothing taken away.
All mode receive: WFM, NFM, SFM (Super Narrow FM), WAM, AM, NAM (Wide, standard, Narrow AM), USB, LSB & CW. A 3.0 kHz SSB filter is employed with true carrier re-insertion resulting in non-offset frequency readout for easy tuning of SSB transmissions. An attenuator and noise blanker are also featured. A meaningful band plan is factory programmed specific to market area, this ensures that the AR8200 SERIES-2 automatically selects the correct receive mode and tuning step (although mode and tuning step may be manually selected at any time), the band plan may be edited via computer control. The side keypad provides four arrow keys presented as a single 'rocker' resulting in more natural and intuitive navigation through the on-screen menus. Tuning is accomplished via a variety of controls including a side panel indented main tuning dial, arrow keys and keypad.
A larger than average back lit LCD with contrast control provides operational data with the ability to add 12 character text comments to each memory channel, memory bank and search bank, a text search feature simplifies identification and recall of stored information. Many text prompts aid operation making programming of search banks etc straight forward. Two frequencies may be displayed along with operating legends and high resolution signal meter and multi-function band scope. The band scope provides adjustable span width from 10 MHz to 100 kHz, you can move the marker, operate peak hold, transfer the marker frequency to VFO and save trace for later recall. The stylish black cabinet has a quality feel with an excellent rear-illuminated keypad with a hard wearing finish.
Flexible dynamic memory bank layout is provided. Memory banks may be varied in size between 10 and 90 channels each i.e. bank 'A' 80 channels / bank 'a' 20 channels with bank 'B' 40 channels / bank 'b' 60 channels etc). 1,000 memories, 20 memory banks, 40 search banks, select scan list, priority and lockout facilities are included. It is also possible to edit and delete individual memories, swap, copy, move and delete whole banks Including dumping all data.
The remote socket not only allows computer control but also supports clone of data between two AR8200 along with tape output, detector (discriminator) output, mute and AGC.
The AR8200 can also be used in conjunction with the Optoelectronics Scout or Watson Super Searcher frequency counters for automatic and instantaneous tuning of any detected frequencies. The optional RT-8200 cable is required.

Key changes over the original AR8200:
* Use of a TCXO for best stability and minimal spurii, such inclusion is a first in a wide band hand-portable receiver, a TCXO is usually associated only with the top-end (much higher priced) base units
* Circuit developments to provide even better performance across the spectrum
* Brighter illumination of the LCD and front panel keypad
* Case colour changed from green to black
* Inclusion of higher capacity heavy duty NiCads rated at 1100mAh
* Telescopic whip with swivel BNC base in place of the previous rubber aerial
SOME AOR AR 8200mk2 REVIEWS FROM THE DIFFERENT INTERNET CHATS:
I see a LOT of great potential with this radio. Looking at the track record of AR8000MK2 you get a good idea of what to expect. This radio offers so much more and should sell like crazy if properly priced. The base features and user customization abilities are simply astounding. Once the optional slot cards and computer software for control are available, it will be even more of a threat to the offerings of every radio manufacturer out there.
The noise limiter (NL) can be used on AM and SSB signals to help reduce the effects of noise spikes and pulses from nearby electrical equipment.
As for new innovations, we have the rotary thumbwheel and 4-way rocker control. The rotary thumbwheel replaces the cylindrical control usually found on the top panel. By doing so, it allows one hand to hover over the control panel while the other remains over the keypad thus achieving a level of efficiency found on few radios of this type complexity.
What can I say about this perfect hand-held rx'er?!? It does it all and very well! It receives nearly everything with overload and bleed-over and even does well on the LF frequencies!
I've been out of the HAM/SWL thing for about 10 years. I decided I wanted to get back into SWL with HF coverage.
I tried the Icom PCR-1000 and was less then impressed. I opted sight unseen for the 8200mk2. I wish I'd tried this rig first!
My first reaction was the learning curve of the radio's operation. Once you get over the fact that the operation manual is a rather thick 140 pages deep, you figure it's rather amazing how much they packed into this radio!
I like the AOR AR-8200mk II receiver. It is small compact almost full band coverage from 500 hz-2040Mhz. It uses AA batteries which is important for emergencies. The AOR is a little tough to understand out of the box, but after reading the book I found it easy to use. The AOR has numerous search and scan banks for organizing a number of frequencies.
Receiver performance is great for a portable. Shortwave reception is good with a Radio Shack wire for portables. The HF reception is good using the wire. HF reception with the telescoping antenna is ok! My ICOM R-75 outperforms the AOR obviously, but I can hear most of the signals over S5 on the R-75 on my AOR! That is great since my R-75 has a long wire and the AOR is using the Radio Shack 23ft. wire. AR-8200mk II is a very powerful scanner and #1 choice!
It's an incredible product. Nobody has got a product like that. You might think about this. Has an eXelent display, a good audio, an intelligent antenna!
Unlike the AR8000, the new AR8200mk2 is extremely well built and thought out. It looks like this radio will stand the test of time and kudos to AOR for doing their homework.
