Looking for a specific song for your Mp3 library? Why not ask your local FM radio DJ to play it for you? This USB FM Radio dongle, lets you snag a song from an FM broadcast instantly (or via schedule) and store it on your computer. (You can convert it from a wav, wma files to mp3 files with free software like Audacity and just port it over to your mp3 player - how cool is that?).
You can also plug the audio cable from the USB Radio into amplified speakers and have a radio controlled from your computer screen.
The reception on this device is actually very good especially since there is no visible antenna. With the dongle sitting at the back of the computer under a table in a room, the reception was still very strong and impressive, however in the end, in areas of no / low reception, there's not much any radio can do about it really. You might need a USB cable to move the Radio to a better position, but we didn't find it necessary.
Also, you might think that Direct streaming through the USB port is better compared to Line-in streaming; but this is not always the case.
This USB FM Radio works via the Line In recording method which provides the following advantages:
1. Dedicated Sound Card - The FM Radio has its Own Soundcard with one purpose ; to decode the FM signals into Analog Audio. This guarantees high performance with little / no drain on your CPU's Processing power (unlike with DVB-T Tuners or direct streaming USB radios which require complicated drivers and programs. This device can be used to listen to radio on even the slowest computers at Near Lossless Quality.
2. Unlimited Program compatability, by connecting to the soundcard on your computer, you can record using ANY program that records from line-in/microphone input, compared to other tuners that can only use one single program from the manufacturer. You can even Stream Audio over the internet to another country by routing the line input over broadcasting applications (eg: teleconferencing programs)
3. Ultra High Operating System and Patch compatability From Windows 98, Me, 2000, Xp, Vista, Windows 7 and Above! - Streaming Devices like Digital TV tuners are very susceptible to certain patches and upgrades. the simplicity of the driver software for this device allows it to work on pretty much all new windows operating systems without issues.
4. The Line in audio output is fixed volume to the best line in recording level. This ensures there is no 'clipping'/ audio cut off, even at the highest bass and treble levels.
Its very simple! The rest is basically self explainatory from the user manual.
1.Plug it into the USB port on your Computer (Laptop, desktop, notebook, EeePc etc)
2. Install the software and drivers from the CD rom.
3. Connect the Audio cable from the FM Radio to the Line-in or Microphone port on your computer's soundcard. The Line in port is the preferred port to use as it is designed for near lossless studio quality audio input recording.
4. Launch the FM Radio program on your desktop
5. Adjust the Line in volume (and master volume) on your computer.
7. When you've had enough, just close the program or mute the line-in volume from the Volume control panel for your soundcard.
1. click on the radio control window and use the keyboard's up and down arrow keys to Very Rapidly Tune your radio (Eg Lower and raise frequency). You will see the channel frequencies fly by; you don't even need to use the channel memory since you can switch channels so quickly. If its not fast enough, adjust the keyboard's repeat rate by going to ' control panel' > 'keyboard'.
2. To receive channels below 87.5Mhz, you need to change the Regional settings on the program to "Japanese". Click on 'Options' button, select 'Frequency Scan' and change the Standard to Japanese. Press the 'Test' button and close the window. You should now be able to tune from 76Mhz to 91Mhz. You can also save /store any stations from that window if you would like to make it easier next time to switch back and forth. To return to the 87.5 - 108Mhz Tuning range, just repeat the above, except, set the standard to "Europe/USA'.
3. You can store up to 36 radio stations (9 stations per page X 4 pages = 36 in total). If you find a channel below 87.5Mhz, save it so you can easily switch between Low (76Mhz) and High (108Mhz) scanning modes.
4. If you don't like WMA, Recording to Mp3 is Free and Easy. First record in WAV if you are going to convert your audio to Mp3 Later. WAV is lossless quality recording. Then just drag and drop your recorded file into Audacity and then click on 'File' and select 'Export as Mp3'. The Audacity software can be obtained for free from . You will also need the oddly named 'Lame Mp3 encoder' "lame_enc.dll" available free online (Click here to get it). you can also record the FM radio directly from audacity or any other software that records from your soundcard, but thats up to you..
If you can't hear anything, make sure "Line In" is not muted or at the lowest level. You can easily check this via your soundcard control panel, (or the long way using windows volume control by going to Start > All programs > Accessories > Entertainment> Volume control) or (Control panel > Sound and Audio).
If you can't see the line in volume settings on your volume control panel, Click on 'Options' on the Windows Volume control menubar, select 'Properties' then look under 'Playback' and make sure the 'Line In' box is checked. You should then be able to adjust the line in volume for the radio. Alternatively, if you are using the microhpone port, adjust the microphone volume instead.
