Close inspection at the right angle of reflection reveals some faint discoloring on the gold top which I was finally able to capture in a photo.
Large plastic base. These plastic bases wear better than the metal ones and they are larger to better prevent tipping. As I was picking through my poles to find the best one, I remembered that some poles have flimsy inserts on the ends for which to screw to the base and mount. I chose, instead, one with a small scratch and solid ends because the flimsy inserts cause tilting and eventually fall out. There is very minor scuffing on the base which you cannot really see unless you are really too close.
