This Mercator Terrestrial World Globe is brand new, fully assembled and is very skillfully made. It measures overall 10.25" inches in width and is 11.75" inches tall.
This Gerard Mercator Globe is made of copperplate printed gores (specially shaped map sections) modeled after the actual 16th Century orginal cartographers globe. The gores are cut and applied by hand on papier-mache globe spheres. The globe is meticulously handcrafted using the complicated gravure printing process that results in the sharpest details, lines and symbols.
The nautical navigators globe stand harks back to days when owning a terrestrial globe was a sign of wealth and stature. The decorative stand is made of detailed turned wood, has a bronze arc and an antiqued French finish.
This terrestrial globe is an exact reproduction of the famous Dutch cartographer (map maker), Gerardus Mercator s engraved charts from 1541. A reprint of the original copperplate gores made in cooperation with the Royal Library in Bruxelles. Gerardus Mercator created the first European Mercator Projection map in 1568, it became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course, known as rhumb lines.
Nautical scenes are depicted on the outside of the Globe and include compass roses, elaborate cartouches and mythical sea monsters.
